Body Image Issues In The Summer

As the heat rises, we begin to show more of our bodies. T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, and bathing suits are the go-to summer options; fitted, short, and skin-exposing. Summer-time may perpetuate our deepest feelings about our bodies. Seeing others in board shorts and bikinis sometimes makes us look at our own bodies. And, sometimes, looking too closely at our own bodies makes us feel as though we don't measure up, leaving us feeling down about ourselves. This is a time to practice self-acceptance.
Here are a few things that you can do:
1. Remember that every body is unique and deserves celebration. Love what you have.
2. Eating well and being active may support a positive relationship with your body. In addition, you know that you are taking action towards the figure that you want. Find a meal plan full of food that you enjoy eating, and find an activity that you enjoy doing, so that you stay focused.
3. Enjoy shopping for clothes that flatter your figure. What is your favourite asset? Celebrate it. Explore styles that make you look and feel your best.
4. If you want to look a specific way, explore what you need to do to move in that direction, and apply what you can. Being motivated and moving towards change will make you feel empowered.
5. If you feel that you are suffering from disordered eating, or body dysmorphic disorder, there are counsellors and therapists waiting to talk with you.
One of our favourite quotes that for me defines the beauty and strength of our bodies is from Jim John, who says "Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live."
Treat yourself with kindness.
